Moreton Bay Drenched 2cm Hail Smashes Homes Amid Severe Storms

Moreton Bay drenched, 2cm hail smashes homes amid severe storms

90km/h winds and intense downpours lash south-east Queensland as wild storms batter the coast

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of further severe thunderstorms this evening

Homes have been damaged and cars submerged in south-east Queensland after a barrage of severe thunderstorms unleashed torrential rain, hail and damaging winds across the region.

The wild weather battered parts of Moreton Bay, Brisbane and the Gold Coast on Wednesday evening, with residents reporting hail the size of 2cm stones and wind gusts of up to 90km/h.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued severe thunderstorm warnings for the region, with the worst of the weather hitting Caboolture, Redcliffe, Bribie Island and parts of Brisbane.

The BOM said the storms were expected to continue into the evening, with further heavy rainfall and damaging winds possible.

Residents have been warned to seek shelter indoors and to avoid driving through floodwaters.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has received numerous calls for assistance, with crews responding to reports of fallen trees, damaged homes and flash flooding.

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said crews were working to clear debris and assess the damage caused by the storms.

"We're urging people to stay safe and to avoid driving through floodwaters," Commissioner Leach said.

"If you see fallen powerlines, please stay well away and report them to Energex immediately."

Energex crews are working to restore power to homes and businesses affected by the storms.

The BOM has warned that further severe thunderstorms are possible across south-east Queensland tonight, with heavy rainfall and damaging winds likely.
